When people think of small California towns like Modesto and Turlock, what usually comes to mind is the long and storied history the area has in agriculture. And while for many years this mental picture was one starkly contrasted to those we might have when thinking of areas bustling with innovation, entrepreneurship, and business, it certainly shouldn’t be, at least not anymore. Because just like it did with Rock and Roll, the internet has changed all that.
One of California’s biggest industries is Agriculture. If you look at the GDP output of California, you’d be tempted to think that this isn’t the case, but that’s largely because in contrast to the tax burden in California, (in 2010, California had the 4th highest tax burden of all the fifty states at 13.4% of the state GDP, – it is now around 10%,) it only makes the Golden State about one 5th as much as taxes do.
But agriculture is big business for California. How big? As of 2017, California agriculture is a $42.6 billion dollar industry that generates at least $100 billion in related economic activity, and the state’s agricultural sales are more than that of any other state. California transported more agricultural product by air in 2007 than 23 other states combined, by any mode of transport.
You used to have to take out big billboard advertisements to advertise your store or pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to be included in newspaper articles or featured in small trade magazines or circulations in order to be seen. You’ve have to take up actual real estate somewhere, such as a bus bench or run ads on the sides of buses. But the days of having to do such things to get in front of eyeballs is gone. Not because those advertising opportunities don’t exist anymore, but because the way that people see the world is different now.
More than ever, people are on their smartphones, tablet, laptops, or desktop computers. In fact, people in 2017 are spending up to an unimaginably whopping 5 hours per day on such devices. They aren’t spending 5 hours a way walking Sparky past the bus stop. They aren’t spending 5 hours a day driving past that billboard on that one street. And the worst part of all (get ready to sulk in your chair if you are currently spending on these advertising platforms,) but the eyes that do catch your ad aren’t even qualified as being interested in the products or services you’re offering – yet you’re still paying for uninterested pre-teens to see them.
Jack Nicholson said it best in his Academy Award nominated performance as US Marine Corp Colonel Nathan R Jessup in the Golden Globe nominated film ‘A Few Good Men.’

Having a restaurant, winery, brewery, natural foods shop, or any other business that benefits from the multi-billion dollar agricultural industry gives you an amazing opportunity to tap into the awareness of other people who are looking to purchase. And that’s where Social Media Marketing and other digital marketing strategies comes in.
Anytime you have a business that exists within an industry that is as booming as agriculture, there is no excuse or reason why you don’t have consistent clients to sell to. The market is there, and numbers can’t be argued with. The opportunity is there with over 1 Billion active user accounts on Facebook alone. The experience and know how is there, with companies like ours who are right here in the community and who have specialized in Social Media Marketing and SEO services from some of the most prolific digital marketers in the world.
A great example of this marriage between digital marketing and agriculture is Gary Vaynerchuks Wine Library TV. Gary is one of the most passionate entrepreneurs on the planet, and he started his empire by marrying the agriculture industry with digital marketing efforts. He is an inspiration to everyone who is lucky enough to cross paths with him and an innovator. He was using YouTube to promote his Brand all the way back before Summer of 2006! Alot of business owners who will be reading this article STILL won’t have a consistent Social Media Marketing strategy in place around YouTube video promotion and he began his over 10 years ago.
